#Lore24 – Entry #206 – Supers Month II #25 – A Tempest Brewing

Musings of Demon Lord Kurae

You know, for all your talk of keeping supernatural threats out of your world over the centuries, you’ve done a rather terrible job of it.  Did you know that there’s an entire family of succubi living on your world?  And all of them clustered around Sentinel City?  They’re not of any relationship to me and my line, but I can sense them just as easily as I can any other of demonic blood.

Oh?  So, you were aware of them!  How very curious.  Why, then, my pet, have they been allowed to remain upon your world?  Hmmm… you’re telling me that this Order of Hecate has made arrangements with them, or at least the head of their clan, this Claire Tempest, and that they have been allowed to stay there?  That is quite an interesting agreement!  One would think that the chaos swirling around them would have led to their destruction or expulsion long ago; were not demon hunters a thing in your world at some point?

Most curious indeed…perhaps these succubi are of a different breed altogether, then?  Or perhaps demonkind from this realm, or whatever realm they were spawned from, are simply an inferior breed to my own, for their powers are insignificant when compared to my own.  Their ambitions are certainly nothing compared to the demons I’m familiar with; they seem to be thinking entirely too small.  This Claire Tempest seems the only real threat, honestly; from what I’ve observed, the others barely register any dangers given their rather miniscule desires and ambitions in the grand scheme of things.  Although the facility ran by Jennifer Tempest is of some interest;  could be some wonderful recruits waiting for me there…yes, indeed, there are a pair of souls absolutely craving power right there…

Still, I think I’ll be keeping an eye on them.  Something tells me they could be trouble for me down the line… Oh, yes, you’re quite right, I should just eliminate them now, but where’s the fun in that?  I’m curious to see just how they react when I start my invasion in earnest.  Will they stand up and defend their world, or will they move on, or perhaps join me?

It’s not knowing that keeps me coming back for more, my pet.  I’m a demon; I thrive on chaos, after all.

#Lore 24 – Entry #111 – Sci-Fi Month II #20 – Repeated Security Issues at VV’s Pink Pussy Lounge

From Personal Logs of Gravius Scharaiden, Chief Security Officer, assigned UEF-04 Maharani Morgiana, decryption algorithm successful, translated from original Aerian script.

Allowing this place aboard the ship was a damn mistake.  Security threat from Hell, and a public nuisance. Barely even two weeks into this trip and I’ve had to send security three times.  Going to talk to the captain about this; should be closed down immediately.  Operator was already on my watch list, didn’t take her long to prove us right.  If I have my way, we’ll drop her off at the first mud-hut colony we come across and be done with it.

UPDATE:

Captain Silvercask didn’t share my appraisal of the situation.  Civilians should be held to higher standards onboard this ship, should be made to follow the same regulations and face the discipline as the military crew.  Would make things a lot more tolerable.

This is why you shouldn’t mix the two.  All military or none I say.  This is going to end badly.

Captain’s letting the lounge stay open for now.  Called it an “adjustment period”, as everyone gets used to everyone else, as territory is established, things will calm down, supposedly.  I don’t think so.  This place will be a problem unless the issue is dealt with directly.  All alcohol should be banned anyway, on the entire ship.

I’ve placed a security team in the corridor outside the lounge indefinitely during business hours.  May extend that to full-day surveillance if I don’t change my mind.  Spoke to Verlucia myself after the last incident; she’s all charm and innocence, said passions just got stirred up when she sang, that people were just not used to long hyperspace trips like this.  She’s persuasive, likely could make most people do about anything for a chance to please her.  Didn’t work on me, though.  Saw right through it.  Told her to straighten up or I’d see her arrested and booted off the ship.  She didn’t seem too pleased, but that’s not my concern.

Will look into monitoring activities in the vicinity of the lounge as well.  Sure it’s more than drinks and entertainment that goes on there.  Could smell the sex in the air from outside the place.  Probably some drugs being pushed through there too.  Going to cause issues all over the damn ship.  May make a point to show up there myself as soon as possible, see what’s going down for myself.  Let Verlucia know that I’m not going to let her escape my attention for long.  She’ll correct herself or I’ll correct her, with security pressure or by kicking her off the ship.  Simple as that.

UPDATE 2:

That kerryn reporter, Kajira, is starting to nose around VV’s more often now.  Can’t trust her, didn’t agree with her getting added to the crew last minute.  Seems the type to cause trouble, probably already has.  Wouldn’t be surprised if she’s responsible for that last fight; my team said they saw her talking to both parties previously.  Going to have to watch her more closely.  May be another one we’ll have to offload somewhere.  Will have to monitor her communications, see what she’s telling and to who.  Will get Burnout to set it up in the morning.

#Lore 24 – Entry #103 – Sci-Fi Month II #12 – Known Commonalities Amongst Demon Sector Creatures

From the Official Report by Bovinius Greenwhisker, Herdminder, assigned to UEF-04, Maharani Morgiana.

Though our study of the creatures native to the Demon Sector has only just begun, there are several notable commonalities shared amongst a significant number of creatures which should be noted and observed in the field.  Much of our information comes from the local wildlife captured and studied in the Valefar system, but long-range messages received from other exploratory teams deeper within the Demon Sector have revealed these traits to be common there as well.  It should be noted that these traits are NOT found in ALL lifeforms we have thus far encountered; aside from coloration and size differences, many of the species we have encountered thus far are almost identical to what we are familiar with.  These traits, while most common in predators, are sometimes present in the prey animals as well, making for some interesting and potentially dangerous combinations.

  • Aggression – The most common trait attributed to this particular type of Demon Sector wildlife is their aggression. Even the herbivores are more aggressive than one might expect, often choosing to fight when threatened instead of running.  The colonists of Valefar V have dealt with the particular type of “raptors” common in the temperate regions of the main continent for some time (though these creatures are most certainly to be classified as dinosaur-type creatures, not avians), and they are known for highly aggressive pack behavior and their fearlessness; they are known to attack even low-flying grav-craft used in driving them from claimed territory.  Some subspecies of Valefari deer are likewise aggressive, charging to attack hunters instead of fleeing, the males possessing particularly vicious antlers that are easily able to tear through unprotected flesh.
  • Intelligence – Animals of the “Demon Sector type” (we really should settle on an official name for these…) are also possessed of uncommon intelligence and cunning, capable of tactical thinking and problem solving. The Valefari raptors are known for their pack tactics, luring hunters into tracking one of them while others attack from the flanks, or even luring the unwary into rudimentary traps, such as creating rockslides or making use of quicksand.  A breed of rodent first encountered by explorers and later studied by UEF-01 in the Dantalion subsector is particular adept at navigation, possessing almost a minotaur-like quality to traverse mazes, and subsequently, structures, and are rather fond of the outer coating used on wiring, so they make for excellent saboteurs.
  • Increased Size – Compared to other known species of similar types outside the Demon Barrier, the Demon Sector variants are thus far universally larger, on average at least fifteen percent larger (mostly due to increased muscle mass), though some are much larger. Again, the Valefari raptors are five to six feet high on average, with the alphas being as tall as eight feet, their long balancing tales making their length between eight and twelve feet.  The deer share similar increased size and mass, and the saboteur rodents average out to be about two feet from nose to tail.
  • “Spicy” Flavor – The natural flavor of meat collected from the various “Demon Sector creatures” has been described as “spicy” or hot naturally, whether in its raw state or cooked, though cooking tends to make the meat even hotter, depending on the method used (it should be noted that certain variations of these species, depending on their nature, are harder to cook than others, see Elemental Resistances below). This can be mitigated with certain herbs and spices, and there seems to be a growing movement to perfect “Demon Cuisine”.
  • Brilliant Coloration – These types of creatures are usually noted for their brilliant colorations that don’t always blend in with their surroundings. They, like the succubi, are usually possessed of brilliantly colored skin and fur, of various hues of red, orange, green, and blue, though many other colors have thus far been encountered.  These colors are often matched with stripes or spots not unlike those of predatory felines.
  • Elemental Resistances – Of the known thirty types of “Demon Sector” animal variations encountered thus far, twenty-six of them possess some form of elemental resistance, usually related to the environment in which they have been encountered. Fire and cold resistances seem to be the most common thus far (and these are also the ones hardest to cook properly due to the higher heat required for cooking in both cases, either to overcome the natural resistance to flame and heat or to avoid burning the cold-resistant meat with too high a flame).  Similar resistances have been noted to acids and toxins, electricity, natural and otherwise, and even one species has proven resistant to divine magic.  It would be safe to assume that a newly encountered creature will possess a type of resistance, and thus should be carefully observed before engaging if at all possible.

Though we have no measurable metrics to validate the idea, it is theorized that creatures possessing some or all of these traits have demonic blood in their heritage.  Many traits of these creatures are shared by the succubi with whom we are familiar (and yes, I mean the race more correctly identified as ‘mazoku’, despite the current day common parlance), though their ratio of male to female members seems to be more in line with normal animals of similar species.   Some of those capable of using divine power in battle have reported that their holy magic affects these creatures as they would a demonic or other extra-planar creature, so this theory holds water.  Further time and study will tell us for certain, though.

#Lore24 – Entry #69 – Fantasy Month #9 – Mazoku

From the journal of Angeliqua “Goldeneyes” Cartacustos:

Another general topic today, it seems.  Well, so be it.

“Mazoku” is the name given to those of humanoid or near-humanoid ancestry who have visible signs of a demonic taint in their bloodline.  The term likely originates from the early days of the Demonic Incursion, when the first demons were coming through the dimensional barriers and sewing their seeds throughout the world, simply to distinguish between a true demon and those who were merely spawned from demons.  Records from the period are somewhat unclear on exactly what differentiated a Mazoku from a half-demon spawn, but there are distinct differences between the two that may be somewhat generational; the first creatures born of demon-kind upon the world were distinctly much more demonic and stronger in nature, whereas the Mazoku only share some of the same general features and only a fraction of the supernatural power of a true or even half demon.  Though the bloodlines have thinned, and there are reports of attempts to cleanse the taint from certain families, it still remains quite strong, with no indication of being cleared any time soon.

Mazoku are decidedly chaotic in their physical makeup and tend toward having a more free-spirited and chaotic nature about them, owing to their heritage.  An astonishingly high number of them are female, some estimates putting the number at well over ninety-five percent being born as such.  This is undoubtedly due to the heritage of the Demon Lord Suzu’Reitani and her Daughters (some theories indicate that every demon that came through during the Incursion were her children), the power of the demonic blood overriding normal reproduction.  Female Mazoku are commonly called ‘succubus’, whereas the ever-rare male examples are called “incubus”.  All, regardless of their original heritage (be it human, elf, dwarf, kobld, kerryn, orc, etc.) share similar physical traits in addition to those of the race which birthed them, namely unnatural skin colors, most commonly in shades of red, blue, white, purple, and black, as well as some form of horns growing from their heads, usually from the forehead or upon the sides of the head, and most usually have tails of some form.  They also tend to have sharper teeth, goat-like eyes, and claw-like fingernails.  Other demonic features seem to be rarer, including actual claws, cloven hooves, thicker scaled flesh, wings (some of which being actually capable of flight), and unnaturally strong resistances to certain elements, such as fire or ice or even acid and electricity.

Owing to their heritage as descendants of the Succubus Queen, Mazoku tend to be of exceptional, perhaps even supernatural, beauty, and are commonly described as being remarkably charismatic and persuasive.  Further, many have some limited inborn magical talents, tending most commonly toward emotional manipulation and charm-based effects, but in some cases presenting as elemental manipulation or the creation of illusions.  Many of them are natural sorcerers, and excel in the magical arts.

Socially, at least within the Empire, Mazoku remain a minority within the population, but prejudices here are much less severe (perhaps due to the kerryns generally being the lowest of the races, or perhaps due to their higher numbers here?) than other nations, and often they are just as capable of gaining powerful leadership positions through their own merits as anyone else (take the High Inquisitor Elvoix Vaktra Flamescale, a kobold-born Mazoku, for example).  Feelings on the Mazoku vary in other parts of the world, from ambivalence to outright fear and persecution depending on where you are.  Though I haven’t traveled and studied in the lands beyond the great oceans, enough accounts exist to safely assume that Mazoku are generally not as well tolerated beyond the Empire in most other places, but I would quite enjoy the chance to make determinations on the subject myself one day.

#Lore24 – Entry #66 – Fantasy Month #6 – Demon Lord Suzu’Reitani, Bringer of Calamity

From the journal of Angeliqua “Goldeneyes” Cartacustos:

I was rather curious as to why Felaria had today’s prompt delivered in written form, and my curiosity was quickly sated, for one does not invoke the name of demons verbally, especially those as ancient and powerful as this particular Demon Lord, lest their sight and wrath fall upon you.  That is traditional wisdom, and one must perform the proper ritual to communicate with a denizen of the lower realms (and what a ritual it must be to reach a demon lord), but perhaps it is best not to take chances?

The great Demon Lord Suzu’Reitani, Queen of Succubi and the Bringer of Calamity, thusly named for it was her coming that led to the Great Cataclysm that shook the very foundations of the world some two-thousand years ago.  Though much history was lost following the great upheaval, we do have records that state quite clearly that it was her entry into the world that led directly to the downfall of the kerryn goddess Sarresh and sealed the fate of the kerryns to be forever enslaved, less they cause another disaster that would see the world utterly destroyed.

This of course, like many things in history, is up for interpretation, for there is ample evidence that it was the Elvish Dominion that called forth the demons into the world, though they’ll never admit to such a thing, certainly.  This discussion is for another time, however.

This great demon lord sought to conquer Andyllion and use it as her bastion in her desires to claim the entirety of our realm as her own.  From what is generally accepted, she masterminded the many wars that marred the decades before the Great Cataclysm, using her many daughters to plant seeds of deceit, bending wills to her own devices, and building the great onyx tower that would serve as the beacon for opening a gateway to her domain and allowing her to come through to claim the world.  The true nature of her failure to take the world as her own has been lost in the chaos caused by the destruction of the great gateway tower, but we do know that her destruction in this world is what triggered the Great Cataclysm that reshaped the very surface of the world, toppling nations, destroying countless civilizations, and forever changing the fabric of our world.

The true depths of her machinations are still far from being fully explored, though her legacy has certainly remained.  To this day there are still those whose ancestry can be traced directly to her blood, for all mazoku are descended from her daughters, their demonic features easily marking them as such, as does the fact that they are almost entirely female, with estimates of less than one-percent of the mazoku being male.  Many creatures maintain demonic qualities, for Suzu’Reitani’s taint runs deep, and her kind are known to breed with anything, and true demons are still not unheard of, though full manifestation in the material world is thankfully rare.  However, there are still many cults worshiping demons, some perhaps even dedicated to Suzu’Reitani herself, though such worship is strictly outlawed and must necessarily remain hidden.

Thankfully another true demon lord has not been summoned into the realm, and hopefully none are planning such madness again.  It is the ever-present danger presented by demons, their unmatched capacity for destruction, that orders of exorcists, like that of the Holy Order of Rashnikova, still exist, and are rarely if ever bored.  Those caught worshipping and summoning demons are dealt with harshly, no mercy granted, and none expected, for one who dedicates themselves to such darkness are far too dangerous to be left to their machinations.

LORE24 ENTRY #21 – Alyssa Cortavelli

Category – Person

Alyssa Cortavelli is a Succubus crime lord and information broker based on Sentinel Prime, part of the larger Cortavelli crime family that has its fingers in multiple systems.  Her base of operations is called the Demon’s Den, a hotel turned nightclub with a strong flavor of BDSM subculture.  Though she is somewhat new to the underworld, her eye for detail and talents learned from her years as a corporate investigator have served her well, and she has quickly become a well known and trustworthy source of illicit information, goods, and services.  She was quick to surround herself with talented people who supplemented the areas in which she was deficient, and has close ties to the church of Yurisaya, often being spotted with its local members.

Alyssa did not always have criminal ambitions, nor was she particularly interested in having a reputation.  In her early years, she actually turned her back on her family, choosing instead to learn proper business methods, going to school and earning her way up through the corporate ladder.  Unlike her more infamous sisters, Alyssa was a “changeling”, and appeared completely human at birth and in her early years.  Always something of an outcast, giving up on her family ties and taking the name Cordova, she worked hard, strictly controlled her indulgences, and passed for human for several years.  It was only when her company, Redstone-Starsazza Property Management, was taken over by DSM that her life would change forever.  Expecting to be laid off and already planning her next move, Alyssa was not prepared to find herself at the mercy of none other than Rivalle Volcari herself.  The cruel head of DSM had taken a personal interest in Alyssa, having easily found out about Alyssa’s heritage and falsified records of her true nature, and threatened her with severe penalties should she not continue with her duties.  Rivalle would proceed to subject Alyssa to an ever-growing list of indignities that would eventually lead Alyssa to losing herself for a time, indulging in the pleasures and “sins” she had for many years carefully avoided.  Over the months and years Alyssa served Rivalle, her appearance would change from an unassuming human woman to the succubus she is today.

Now, Alyssa has striking red skin and glowing yellow eyes, a pair of wicked horns curling up from her forehead, wearing her dark hair long, typically in a ponytail.  Previously rather average in appearance, her body has filled out as her demonic heritage asserted itself, now quite shapely with much of it on display, as Alyssa prefers to wear low-cut tops and short skirts, most often as tight as possible, and quite frequently made of latex.  Though she only stands about five and a half feet tall, she typically appears to be around six feet due to the high heels she wears, and is not the least bit shy about using her succubus charms to put those she deals with off balance, whether she is being seductive or intimidating.  She now appears much like her sisters, who, after some rather uneasy reunions, have embraced her and brought her into the family properly, Alyssa having proved that she is now fully dedicated to their life of crime.

Having established herself on Sentinel Prime, Aylssa is something of a local celebrity now, having risen from practically nothing to a respected business owner with one of the most popular clubs on the planet.  Her club is a known neutral zone where plenty of clandestine meetings take place, and she has forged a reputation for discretion in sensitive matters.  She also has a reputation befitting her demonic appearance should someone cross her, having devised multiple inventive and humiliating punishments for those who would cause trouble within her domain; perhaps owing to her time under the thumb of Rivalle Volcari, she would much rather see them suffer than simply killing them.

LORE24 ENTRY #14 – Succubi

Category – Cultural

Though one unfamiliar with them may think the Succubi were a recent find what with the opening of the Demon Sector, they have actually been around since the Demonic Invasion thousands of years ago.  If nothing else, the blood of demons is strong, as their influence still shows quite clearly upon the Succubi to this day with their “demonic” appearance:  skin and eyes hat are often shades of red or orange or other “unnatural” hues, horns on their heads, tails, claws, and goat-like eyes being very common.  Unlike their progenitors from long ago, however, they are not inherently evil, though many within the galaxy may not believe that to be the case, as they are, on many worlds, treated as second-class citizens.  Regardless of this stigma, Succubi are considered to be extremely beautiful and charismatic, and can, given the chance, become amazingly successful.

They are known as ‘Succubi’ for a few reasons.  Firstly, beyond their obvious beauty, due to a unique quirk in their genetics, they can generally interbreed with any of the known races, though there is an extremely high chance (perhaps over 90%) of the child being female, sharing appearance and traits of both parents; the rare male child is still considered a ‘Succubus’, though some of these may call themselves an ‘Incubus’.  Second, their natural (or unnatural) charisma and innate ability to read others’ emotions gives them a significant advantage in interpersonal dealings.  Third, some Succubi still retain a small measure of power from their demonic heritage, and can manifest it in ways that may unsettle some, such as manifesting flames, causing their voices to boom like thunder, changing ambient temperature around them, etc, though arcanists in the know consider these abilities to be simple arcane manifestations no different from what they can do.

More uncommon amongst the Succubi are those who can pass for the race of their birth parents.  In some cases, these rare individuals do not manifest the unusual skin, eye colors and other demonic features of their brethren at birth, and appear much as their non-Succubi parent lineage.  In some, this lasts their entire lives, and these individuals generally have an easier time integrating on worlds where Succubi are looked upon with suspicion.  In others, it seems that over-indulging in the vices classically associated with demons and evil (the “Seven Deadly Sins”) tends to draw their out their inner demonic nature, causing their bodies to change to match their natures by taking on the typical Succubi appearances.  Though there currently isn’t an official name for these types of Succubi, the term ‘changeling’ has been used in some cases.
